CAPTAIN’S LOG
Written by Rob & Hilly Ward

Sorry about last month as I was on holiday when the newsletter went out, so lets see what June has brought us. We had the Club Championship which was won by young Tom Owen (well done, Tom). There was also the Canada Cup which was won by Mel Harris; about time Mel was cut!

We had a fantastic early morning 5.30am start for the Cock Crowers. I hope everyone enjoyed the Brut.

There was a huge turnout for the mixed fours competition on the Friday and I think it was because of my mum's cake - wasn't it delicious?  Anyway, the winners in Division 1 were PJ Hughes and his partner, Janice Perry, and in Division 2 the winners were Michele and Albere May.  Congratulations to both couples.

But the best was left until last……. Captain’s weekend. I would like to thank one and all for all your help and the support given to me and my family, it will never be forgotten.

I think it would have been hard to find a more popular winner than Peter Marsh .A great last round of 63 was brilliant, well done Peter.

GREENS

I was delighted to see so many members enjoying the new practise facilities and this was particularly busy across Captains Weekend!
A number of other projects are either being undertaken or are in the pipeline. Hopefully, you will have seen the works undertaken on the 8 and 6 teeing areas. This includes clearing the back of the teeing area to enable the ground to be levelled and the tees extended. On the 8th for instance, this will make the tee shot a little more challenging, the hole some 10-15 yards longer and will also have the effect of directing balls away from the houses on the right of the fairway.
The majority of the work has been undertaken with the help of volunteers so if you want to lend a hand please inform the General Manager or speak to John Penn.

Centenary Plus 4 Competition

Sunday 16th August 2009

The list is now up in the hall for this competition which is in its seventh year.  As far as we know it is the only competition which brings together gentlemen, ladies, cadets, full, full restricted, 5 day members and this year will take the form of a shot-gun start at 2pm.  Teams will be made up of one lady and three men and the whole afternoon is fun.  Well…..  There is a barbecue organised by the Club for the evening and all, including your friends and wives, are welcome, though please let the kitchen know.  The competition cost is £5 which is payable at the Pro Shop – and this includes one mulligan.  Yep, it’s that type of competition!  Last year the prize donated by Freddy George was for a playing lesson.  Won by Tom Reagan.  Anyone know if he’s had it yet?!

Ladies Section

Thursday, 02 July 2009

This month the ladies celebrated two firsts and enjoyed some very enjoyable golfing days.

On 22 June we played at the beautiful East Herts Golf course for our annual awayday and invited a number of the gentlemen to join the fun. We were welcomed by the familiar face of Alex McDonald. Overawed by the occasion the men did not play at their best and the winning team was 3 ladies Janet Brown, Janet Wright and Cynthia Younis. A good time was had by all and we hope there will be more to follow.

Another, more significant, first was celebrated by the Ladies Section at the end of the week when 14 ladies played in their first ever competition on the Sunday of Captain’s Weekend (a Stableford). Sadly the hot weather took its toll of some competitors so reducing the field. We hope for better luck next year.

Sabres (written by Will Organ)

So far this season the Sabres have Played 6 Won 2 Drawn 2 and lost 2 which is not bad as we have had to field players who normally play for the Foxes. Sabres is fourball better off scratch. Our top player this season so is Adam Farmer (Another fox) who has played 3 and won 3.

PS:  On another note the first part of the annual match against Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club took place on Sat 20th June at North Midd. A great day was had by all and at half time we are leading by 7.5 to 2.5. Return match at Felixstowe is on Sat 8th August
